Nowadays, developed science and cosmetology give us specific information about various biblical substances like myrrh. Myrrh is the „blood”, resin of a small, thorny tree from the family of Commiphora. When the tree is cut the wound begins to discharge resin. This is myrrh in the very first step to progress in the specific cosmetic, oil or our Bible SPA treasures.
The best remedy for everything: myrrh
Myrrh in the Bible is “the cure for everything”. Of course, we know it smells heavenly and indeed, it was used to calm the soul. A kind of biblical aromatherapy! But it was also used for rough skin, for postpartum stretches and for pain anesthesia. Moreover, not only living could get benefits of myrrh. It was used for anointing the dead “on the final journey”. No wonder that Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloe for the funeral of Jesus. In the Bible myrrh has its own place and value. So – how is it with these specific, concrete applications of myrrh?
Myrrh in the Bible
Myrrh appears quite frequently in the scriptures. It shows its cosmetic benefits as well as healing and analgesic effects. In the book of Esther, which dates back to the fifth century BC, myrrh is using like a great skincare cosmetic. „Now when the turn of each young lady came to go in to King Ahasuerus. After the end of her twelve months under the regulations for the women—for the days of their beautification were completed as follows: six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and the cosmetics for women…” (Esther 2:12).
Now we know that this kind of procedure makes the skin so delicate, soft, and makes it the perfect color, just like a baby’s bottom! And now we can understand – why for half of a year(!), every single day they anointed Esther’s whole body of myrrh. It is incredible, isn’t it?
Bible SPA for mothers and newborns
Furthermore, myrrh is amazing balm for infants and theirs mothers. Remember, when Three Kings come to Mary after she gave birth to Jesus? Sometimes we think they really didn’t know what to give the newborn child and its mother! But they gave them great gifts. “After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). Myrrh is a great, wonderful remedy both for postpartum stretches and nappy rash of babies! Of course we all know the symbolic meaning of these gifts, but they also were so practical!
